Help me win some stuff!

Hey!
Sorry for my poor posting performance lately, I've had a lot going on; my boyfriend's been ill, I bottomed out of uni, and I've not been feeling so great myself, which leads to not wanting to put make up on or take pictures, and I've had no money to try new things and write reviews on. I'm currently waiting on my July GlossyBox in the post, which will be late because of a mysterious problem with payment, and then I'll be writing about that, and I'm gonna be working on some game related posts as well. I'm hoping that writing will get me out of my funk.

You might remember me talking about one of my favourite bands, King Lizard, and how awesome they are. They are running a competition right now for some signed goodies and free tickets and things. Basically, the more people click my link, the better chance of me winning. I have long had the status of King Lizard's number one fan, and I want to cement my title.

They won't ask you to fill anything in or click anything else, or direct you to any other surveys or buy anything or sign up for anything. Just a click and you're done. No extra clicks though, it won't help.

I have 11 days and the person to beat has 77 clicks. At present, I have 12. If you could tweet my link or put it up on your blog, I'll totally be your friend forever.

A Competition For My Absence

Hello everyone, and goodbye.

Not forever! I'm going to Dundee for a week and since my great aunt does not have the internet, and I won't have all my make up with me, I won't be posting during the week. I get back next Tuesday and I thought, "a week? That's long enough to have a competition!"

Prizes

To celebrate hitting the 30 subscriber mark, I'll be giving away my biggest prize yet.

1st Prize
A set of FOUR Eyeko London Lips Lip Gloss tubes worth £26!
Consisting of -

  • Mayfair
  • Portobello
  • Primrose Hill
  • Knightsbridge
2nd Prize
A selection of Avon samples
Including -
  • Perfume samples such as 50s Glam and 60s Mod
  • Lipstick samples from the Pro-to-Go range
  • Skincare samples from Anew
How To Enter

I'm changing things up this time. As always you have to be subscribed to the blog and comment on this post telling me you want to enter.

Taking a leaf from other blog giveaways I've seen, you can earn more entries by doing things to publicise the blog. It's kind of like buying one ticket for a raffle vs buying a sheet of tickets. Or something. Actually it's closer to roulette, you can bet on any single number from 0 to 36 or you could bet on every number from 1 to 12. That's a better analogy.

Ok, so...
  • An extra entry if you follow me on Twitter and tweet "@HellThirteen enter me"
  • Another if you tweet about the competition and include a link
  • One more if you "like" Joysticks and Lipstick on Facebook
  • And finally, I will give an extra two entries for every blog/social network/forum that you use to link to this page and talk about my blog or this competition. Please comment here with a link (and if it's in a side bar or something, let me know the location) because if I didn't see it, it didn't happen ;-)
YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO ANYTHING TO BE ENTERED OTHER THAN SUBSCRIBE AND COMMENT "enter me."

Doing these things will improve your chances but, knowing that not everyone is connected to Twitter or BBs or social networking sites, it is not compulsory.

I'm gonna give you a week and a half to enter (I know I get back on Tuesday but it's an 11 hour coach ride, I'm not doing anything when I get home!) so it will close on FRIDAY 10th JUNE 2011.

Sorry guys, I would put up photos of the prizes, but my coach leaves in 2 hours and I need to get ready!

See you all in a week!

An Award? For Me? Aww!

I was just looking at my Twitter mentions (you can see my feed in the side bar and you're welcome to follow me) and I saw that the lovely lady who writes The OPI Junkie has given me an award.
Thank you!
The Liebster Award is designed to bring well deserved additional recognition to those bloggers with less than 300 followers.  If you receive the award you link back to the blogger had nominated you and nominate 3 more blogs.

So here are my nominations:
Gemma, who writes Flab To Fab, a blog about her quest to loose weight and be healthier. I find her inspirational. She just reached the 2 stone mark.

Laura Pernetti Kinch, my friend who writes Healthy Skincare For You. She reviews skincare products and she's lovely.

Lastly, the beautiful Sarah May aka Purplepain, author of The inept's guide to first-time gardening. She, like me, is responsible for a garden for the first time, and is documenting her attempt to turn it into something wonderful.

I moved to a new house a year and a half ago and have a garden after 24 years of a tiny balcony filled with mum's pot plants. Now I'm having to teach myself how to make my garden beautiful without my mum to guide me (though the library she left me does have books on most subject matter, including gardening) and it's great to read Sarah May's posts and know I'm not alone. Starting a garden can be a daunting task, (like re-decorating a room only you have to grow the paint!) and she has some great ideas mixed in with hints and tips.

Thank you again to The OPI Junkie for the award. I am humbled at being made to feel so welcome in the blogging community.

TTFN,
Hell Thirteen

News Update

Sorry no post proper just yet, I'm in the middle of editing another two videos on the make up I did for Kayleigh at Hotter Than Glammed.

Just to give you a peek into the future, I have some more reviews coming. I have a GINORMOUS e.l.f. haul/review to do (probably why it's taken so long to get round to) including the new Complete Coverage Concealer in "light".
I got a gift bag from Origins including the GinZing I've been hearing Jim Chapman rave about (brother to the Pixiwoo girls), duo lipgloss and mascara.
I got a few things from Lush, too, and have been testing them so I can tell you about them.

I also won a prize!

Eyeko have been running a competition for best beauty tricks and one of my tricks came second, so as soon as said prize arrives I will review whatever comes in it. In the high likelihood that I already own everything they send me I will probably run my own competition and send it on, but we shall see. I think I need some more subscribers before I do another giveaway. Shall we say, 50? I'll have to think about it...

Speak to you soon,

At last, the Sigma E25 (travel size) give away!

Okay guys, it's finally here.

I've had a week to test it out, and I give it a full thumbs up. I wasn't sure how I would feel about it at first, I felt like travel size would mean tiny, and I couldn't find the travel size on the website, I didn't know what was going on with it. Then it arrived.

Sure, it's not as big as my Fraulein 38 brushes or my e.l.f brushes, but it's roughly the same size as my Benefit fluff shadow brush, and I love that brush. It certainly isn't a miniature, and for me the size is just fine.

The brush is thick and soft, different to most blenders I have that are smaller and round, the Sigma E25 is for a wider and more smooth blend than the e.l.f. blending brushes, when it has to be a perfect gradient. Some people liken it to the MAC 217 brush, sadly I wouldn't know because I can't afford MAC brushes!
I am of the mind that the more brushes you have in your collection the better, so I wouldn't say that it should replace any existing brushes you have, but I would say that it will make a great addition to your collection.

I dislike not being able to shop at the Sigma store in my own currency, which means having to worry about conversion rates and charges. It took me well over a week to receive my brush because it has to come to the UK from America, (although I'm sure I've bout things on ebay from China that have arrived quicker,) but it was worth the wait, these are good brushes. The standard size E25 is $9.00 with $3.46 for the economy rate shipping, express shipping is a little ridiculous at $29.95 (over three times the price of the brush) and if you can handle the wait, it works out to around £7.55. If you go to Superdrug you'd be charged over £8 for a QVS brush, and the quality of those is awful. Fair enough, you wouldn't have to wait a week before you could take it home, but it wouldn't last you long and it wouldn't do as good a job.

So, all that out of the way, Sigma are allowing me to give away one of these E25 travel blending brushes to one of you lovely readers!

All you need to do is be subscribed and leave a comment saying "enter me!" and next SUNDAY (1st May) I will pick a winner! I'll get the postal address of the winner and pass it on to Sigma Beauty and they will post the prize out themselves. If you are in my neck of the woods, I am afraid that means it might take some time to get to you, but that's the way this works.

This giveaway is made possible because I am a Sigma Affiliate. This means that if you click the Sigma ad in the sidebar--> and buy something, I will make commission on that sale. This does NOT mean that I will say nothing but nice things about the company or their products in order to get you to buy them. If you want to buy stuff from Sigma and I get money that is great, but I am not a sales person and I'm not trying to make you buy anything.

Thanks for reading!

Katy Perry ET makeup plus new giveaway!

This post is coming out a little late tonight, but I was out partying last night and slept late!

After watching the video for Katy Perry's "ET" I thought I would have a go at recreating one of the looks, because I thought the make up in that video fas just so beautiful.
My camera isn't quite picking up the depth of the colours I used, or it might be my monitor, so I hope the colours look better from your end. It looks amazing in the mirror!

Wish I had some lizard eye contacts!

I started out using Avon Magix primer and L'Oreal Infallible Porcelain foundation, because 1) I was only planning on recreating the eyes and 2) with a pale/white face you could start by covering your face in greasepaint, but it won't last long. Wear a good pale foundation with staying power and you can build colour over that.

After priming my eyes with e.l.f eyelid primer I used a Rimmel eyeshadow pen in a shimmering white to give a good white base to my eyes and to give my white eyeshadow some grip, and blended it in with my finger.

Using the brighter blue of an Eyeko Line & Shine Duo pencil in Popstar, I plotted out the blue parts of the eye and blended them with the sponge end of the Benefit Cupid's Bow brush. I darkened the colour a little using French Blue from the Front Cover Rainbow Eyes 08/09 palette. The blue stops just above the crease of the eye, so you can still see some white when the eye is open. It runs from the middle of the eye to the outer corner and wings out, getting bigger the further out it gets. There is also a blue line underneath the eye, lower than the lashline which would give the illusion of a bigger eye, but the waterline is lined with black, oddly. I made the line too thick, and should have just used a liquid liner to do it.
I covered my eyelids in a shimmering white powder by Real Colours, and added the white shadow from the Scarlett & Crimson palette over the top.

I took a flat liner brush and found as bright a magenta pink shadow as I could. I ended up mixing a magenta shade from my 88 colour palette from Fraulein 38 and the bright pink from my Scarlett and Crimson palette.
The pink colour follows the same line as the blue above the crease, but heading past the inner corner of the eye into the bridge of the nose, and then down. there is a harsh line on the side towards the eye (lower edge of the colour,) and the other side is blended up into the eyebrow and towards the centre of the brow bone.
There is pink below the blue line under the eye that wings out to the edge of the face, there is pink in the outer corner of the eyelid, and there is pink above the outer half of the brows blending up into the temples.

I also used the e.l.f contour brush to fill in pink areas and blend the edges.

I took an Eyeko Graffiti liner in navy and went over the lower edge of the blue colour on the eye and the blue line under the eye to add definition, and then I lined my upper lashline with Bourjois Clubbing ultra black liner, winging it out to meet the blue wing. I also redefined the white line between the blue wing over the eye and the pink wing under the eye, and along the lower lashline. I used a Collection 2000 black pencil to line my waterline.

I curled my lashes and added my special mix of mascara, Lash Injection coated in Big Eyes, and then I added these Tokyo demi lashes, but instead of wearing them on the very outer corners of my eyes as per usual, I put them on starting at the centre of my eyes so they ended just a little before the outer corner of my eyes. I curled the false lashes as well and added a little mascara to them.
At this point the eyes were done, and I decided "what the hey, I'll do the rest of the face, as I'm here!"
I blended the pink with my Avon Peony Pink Cynthia Rowley blush and blended it inwards from the edge of my face, and included the pink triangle shape (or the white v depending on how you look at it) on my forehead, and the weird chin dimple pink spike thing. I used white eyeshadow to powder the non pink areas of my face.

I used a Line & Shine Duo Colour Pencil in Superstar (the Electric Purple end) to colour in my lips, trying not to go too pointed at the cupid's bow to get the right shape. I went over it with the Electric Blue end of the Popstar pencil, blended the two colours together (a lot of people I've looked at on YouTube doing tutorials for this look always use blue lipstick or powder for the lips, but it's actually more purple than blue. It is, however, a very blue purple, as opposed to a red or a neutral purple) and pressed a little shimmery purple powder on top. I later added clear lipgloss because they felt so weird, but that was after I took pictures!

I used a blush brush and the French Blue shadow to add the blue around the outside of the face and on the neck, making sure to get the right shape (kind of like a pair of blue curtains tied back, sweeping down and to the side from a high point in the centre) but I didn't make the harsh line that appears, on second look, to be there on Katy Perry's face. I don't know why I blended rather than a harsh line. I do like the way it looks though.
And then I was done!

My nails were not painted for the look but I do think they fit really well, half blue half purple. I used Eyeko Lilac Polish and Miners blue polish over half the nail.
Finally, my giveaway!

This week I'm going to give away two of the things I used in this look.
1st is an Eyeko Line and Shine Duo Colour pencil for eyes in Superstar (the purple one I used on my lips) which looks like this:

The 2nd prize is those Tokyo Hiroko false demi lashes by Eylure. Here's a better look at them:
I love these lashes, they're easier to apply than a full set, they look amazing and the glue in the box works really well. They are basically the only lashes I wear and I love the purple streaks in them!

To enter, you have to hit the follow button at the top of the page, and leave a comment saying "enter me."

Next week WILL be the Sigma giveaway, I will be reviewing it this week as it arrived this morning and I forgot to use it when I was doing this look! Duh!

TTFN!

PS: Sorry for such a lengthy post! So much to this look, and so many pictures!

Giveaway Winner!

Ok I can see I've had a bunch of pageviews already and clearly you want to know who won.

Thanks to the random number generator at random.org I can announce the winner is Ashley Tiernan.

Congratulations Ashley, I sent you an email a couple of hours ago to let you know, please can you reply with your address so I can send it to you ASAP!

New giveaway starts tomorrow, I STILL haven't received my brush in the post, so I have to choose whether to give away more London Lips glosses in other colours (I have like, 3 more colours, and 2 of each,) a Line & Shine Duo colour eye pencil, or an Eyeko Magic Mascara (not the Big Eyes mascara that I've been talking about recently, I'll try and get one of those to give away but that is so hard to let go! I have 3 tubes in my house but they're all used so that would be unsanitary!)

Let me know what you think and I will start the new giveaway tomorrow!

Oh, you lucky people! Give-Away!

Hello!

Guess who's going to be giving something away? Me!

That's right, Sigma Beauty have given me a travel sized E25 blending brush to give away.

Now, I am not going to start this give-away today, for two reasons: I have 3 subscribers, and I think I need a few more before I can do something like this; and I haven't tried this brush myself yet. I can't give away something when I don't know if it's any good.

Sigma are sending me an E25 brush to try myself, so once it arrives, I'll try it, tell you what I think, and I will do the give-away as long as I have at least 10 subscribers by then. If I don't, I will wait until I do, and then I'll start the give-away. The winner will be chosen at random, I'll contact them for their address, then pass it on to Sigma, who will send out the brush directly. As I get more subscribers I will hold more give-aways like this, and the prizes will get better.

You will need to be subscribed in order to win.

On a smaller note, I bought a load more stuff from EyesLipsFace.co.uk (e.l.f cosmetics) and it arrived today while I was out, so once I get it from the post office I'll be talking about that.
